Calling for Entries - New Travel Writer of the Year Award 2010

The prize for the winner is a terrific kick-start to a commercial writing career. The winner receives $1000 at the awards gala dinner presentation and then afterwards is sent on an assignment to write an article for AA Directions Magazine. This means that, in addition to the prize money, the winner will go on an all-expenses paid trip to write a story for AA Directions and will be paid for their article.

Winner of the 2009 AA Directions New Travel Writer of the Year was Louise Jennings

“I entered the AA Directions New Travel Writer of the Year 2009 competition at the suggestion of my Massey lecturer, and am so glad I did! Winning was a wonderful surprise, given my inexperience in writing within the travel genre. AA Directions provided an impressive prize package; $1000 along with an opportunity to write for their well-recognized magazine. Kathryn Webster, the AA Directions editor was extraordinarily gracious and supportive of a new voice. Winning New Travel Writer of the Year validated my writing, gave me a huge confidence boost and provided the perfect platform for spring boarding into travel writing”.

ENTRY DEADLINE FRIDAY, 12 FEBRUARY 2010

The AA Directions Magazine New Travel Writer of the Year award encourages writers who have never had a travel article published. Entries are judged anonymously by a well-known New Zealand writer, publisher or editor who will present the award at a gala dinner held at the Grand Tearoom at the Heritage Auckland on Tuesday, 23 March 2010.

Kathryn Webster, editor of the AA Directions Magazine says “AA Directions has sponsored the New Writers Award for a few years now and the arrangement works well for all concerned. The winners have been keen to undertake commissions as part of their prize and we’ve enjoyed and appreciated their enthusiasm. It’s an excellent way to introduce fresh talent to the magazine.”
