Awards 2009 Photographer of the Year

Cathay Pacific Travel Photographer of the Year - Amos Chapple

Winner: Amos Chapple

This category was judged on the entrant’s entire portfolio of work entered into the awards across all categories. The winner receives a fabulous trip for two to India, courtesy of Cathay Pacific and a land package courtesy of Adventure World.

Entered in the Best New Zealand Travel Image award category these two images were both taken on Tiritiri Matangi island, showing the lighthouse and a Tui.
 
Also entered in the Best New Zealand Travel Image award category, the left image was taken at Karekare beach as a squall hits and the right image is a seal at the southern end of Karekare beach.
 
These two images were both awarded joint Runner-Up in the Best Travel Image Taken Outside New Zealand award category. The left image shows a tea worker walking home through plantations during a tropical storm in Tamil, India. The image on the right shows a man in a Georgian hat walking through Registan Square in Samarkand, Uzbekistan. Copyright Our Place Publishing.

The right image shows Charlize Theron making her red carpet appearance on the island of Lido, Venice. Both images were entered in the Best Travel Image Taken Outside New Zealand and the Charlize Theron Image received a Highly Commended recommendation.
 
Entered in the Best Series of Travel Images award, on the left are scenes around Petra, Jordan and on the right are a series of images taken in Mumbai, India where Victoria Terminus is one of the busiest train stations in India. Copyright Our Place Publishing.
 
Winner of the Best Unpublished Travel Image, the exclusion zone of Chernobyl, Ukraine was once home to 55,000 and is now a deserted ghost town. The image on the right was also entered in the Best Unpublished travel image award category and shows a Komodo Dragon running in the rain on Rinca Island in Indonesia - the only place they live in the wild. Runner Up - Todd Eyre

Aitutaki Lagoon, Cook Islands - sunlight reflects off clear lagoon waters.
 
Also taken in Aitutaki island in the Cook Islands, the image on the left shows a boy on the bicycle holding a chicken. On the right is an aerial shot of eastern coastline south of Blenheim, both were entered in the Best Travel Image Taken In New Zealand or Pacific Islands award category.
 
Bay of many coves jetty, Marlborough Sounds, just after sunset and Glenelg Jetty, Adelaide, south Australia with a seagull over the busy jetty in the sunset.
 
Both of these images featured highly in the Best Travel Image Taken Outside New Zealand Award category, with the genocide museum at Phnom Penh, Cambodia taking a Highly Commended recommendation and the soldier standing guard in front of a Mao portrait in Tianamen Square, Beijing's gate of Heavenly Peace taking a Runner Up spot.
 
Main beach, gold coast, Queensland's sunset afer a surf, entered in the Best Travel Image Taken Outside New Zealand. And in the Best Series of Travel Images the series of images for a story on Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
 
Both images were taken in Beijing, on the right image in the forbidden city young soldiers perform drills in the courtyard, the left image shows various scenes around Beijing.

 
Taken in Hoi An, Vietnam, an old lady smiles into the camera while working on a local beach - while in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, a local photographer takes Todd's photograph across from the Royal Palace.
 

Runner Up - Grant Sheehan

The left image is of Emperor penguins on fast ice near Scot Base. Published in Grant's book New Zealand Landscapes, Phantom House Publishers, 2008. On the right are King Penguins in a very unusual penguin posture, Macquarie Island, Australia and published in Planet Penguin by Grant Sheehan, Phantom House Publishers, 2008.

The left image is of Macquarie island shore with some of the 600,000 King Penguins that live there. On the right is a series of images showing the Sooty Albatross, Southern Fulmas at night and White Capped Albatross.
 
Ross Island, NZ territory, Antarctica with Mt Erebus in minor eruption. The right image is of fast ice near Scott Base, Antarctica, with Mt Erebus washed by high winds.
 
The images below were taken in Antarctica with the left showing ice bergs in the Ross Sea, entered as a series of travel images. The right image shows fast ice as it breaks up in high wind with the lower slopes of Mt Erebus in the background.

Highly Commended - Aaron McLean

The following images were entered in the Best Travel Image of New Zealand and/or Pacific Islands award category. The left image was taken in Cromwell and the right image was taken in the Crown Range.
 
These images below were taken in a toddy shop in Kerala, India.
 
The image on the left was entered in the Best Unpublished Travel Image award and the image on the right won the Best Series of Travel Images Award, all were taken in Kerala, India by Aaron McLean.
 

Highly Commended - Michaela Heron

All of Michaela's images were entered in the Best Unpublished Travel Image award and were taken in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The image on the left received a Runner's Up recommendation and shows a displaced people's camp, Lubumbashi, Katanga. The image on the right is at Garenganze Bel Air Primary School, Lubumbashi, Ratanga, and shows an 18 year old girl with her baby sister.

 
The image on the left shows a girl pounding maize and the image on the right shows local children gathered around a projector screen waiting for a movie to start in Mfuta, Katanga. This image received a Highly Commended recommendation in the Best Unpublished Travel Image award.
